"Li I" was produced in 1974, and depicts Giger's deceased partner, German
actress Li Tobler. They met in 1966, and married two years later having
fallen madly in love. During the year in which "Li I" was painted, Li gave
up her acting career and moved to San Francisco with an American that she
had fallen in love with, but returned to Giger after a short time. She
grew increasingly depressed and attempted suicide several times.
Tragically, she succeeded in 1975, ending her life with a bullet. Her
death left a terrible emptiness in Giger's life and her memory continues
to haunt him today; Li's image can be viewed in many of his works produced
long after she died.
Thus Li was a source of overwhelming emotions for Giger -
love, anger, fear and despair. And no painting displays all these
qualities as profoundly as "Li I."
