I discovered
the world of Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger through my own interest in things
with a dark, alien aspect. When first exposed to his artwork, I was drawn
to his style immediately. Not only is it so finely produced to an almost
photographic realism, but it portrays a Universe that bewitched my
imagination. In his paintings, ancient symbols entwine with otherworldly,
futuristic technology, pain and fear blend with dreams and eroticism. But
above these, one quality in particular ensnared my fascination; the alien
and macabre beauty that every piece, no matter how shocking and
disturbing, seemed to display. Giger had forged a link between elegance
and evil.
"Li I" is a prime example of this highly unusual yet exquisite quality
found in all of Giger's works. In my opinion, it is one of the most
beautiful and emotional works Giger has ever created.
