One thing I've noticed about Kumamoto is that the bugs here are so much
bigger than the ones in the UK (something you can expect in a warmer
climate). The butterflies, the spiders :shudder:, even the ants...they're
all about twice as big as the UK ones. The centipedes are about 5 times as
big :double shudder:, and poisonous to boot. I've seen a dead beetle larva
that was the size of a small sausage. And the other night, I saw a crane
fly ("daddy-long-legs") that had a leg span bigger than my hand.
Thankfully, the cockroaches aren't super sized. They'd eat out my whole
kitchen if they were.
And I see new animals all the time. I've found that lizards are pretty
common now it's warm; if I go for a walk in one of the wooded areas near
the dormitory, I can see the lizards scuttle across the path. And so many
new birds! I only wish I knew what they were. You could show me almost any
common UK bird and I'd probably be able to tell you what it was. But here,
they're all so different, and nameless. It's so strange seeing these
animals all the time, and not knowing what they're called.
I'm sure new animals will be appearing as spring turns into summer;
Japan's a very seasonal place, with animals replacing each other almost
every month as the weather changes. I look forward to spotting new
wildlife :)
