April 26th 2005 - Butterflies, Murakami

In Britain, you'd be very lucky to spot a swallowtail butterfly; they're very rare, classified as threatened, and protected under UK law. However, here I get to see swallowtails everyday, darting among the flowers. It makes me feel good every time I see them.

I've finally decided on what subjects I'm going to take for definite, the last one being Reading Comprehension. Even though it's level is a bit higher than mine, I really want to take it because we get to study stories by one of my favourite authors, Murakami Haruki (or Haruki Murakami as he's known in the West). I started reading the text we're studying last night in preparation, and, even though it takes some time, I do understand it. If I use a dictionary and look up every word I don't know, it takes me ages but I understand 99% of it. If I don't use a dictionary, however, I can read it far more quickly but understand about 60%. So, I think this class will be a little too fast for me, but I'm determined to work hard at it simply because I love Murakami's work, and I'll never get the chance to study it in such depth again (let alone in it's original language!)
