This afternoon, we did ohanami. For the uninitiated in the weird and
wonderful ways of the Japanese, ohanami is an activity in which the
Japanese sit around outside drinking lots of beer and eating snack food
under the pretence of enjoying cherry blossoms. Since cherry blossoms only
come out for about a week, once a year, it's not that surprising the
Japanese get so worked up about them. I'd say the Japanese get more
excited about cherry blossoms than the British do about Easter.
Anyway, for today's ohanami, Saranne and Ian found a perfect little spot in
the woods behind our dormitory, which even had a wooden summer house
(hooray for shade!). They even brought a barbeque so we enjoyed
char-grilled (with real cherry tree wood!) beef and chicken while drinking
our beer and Smirnoff Ice and eating Japanese crackers and pocky. The
woods are really pretty this time of year, and there were plenty of cherry
trees so we could watch the beautiful cherry blossoms falling like snow.
It was a great day.

Ian tried to do the cooking first; luckily, Saranne stepped in and used
her Australian expertise (we Brits can't help being so bad, we only get
sun about two weeks a year!)

Eating the BBQ food under the little wooden summer house.

Ellie decided to climb a tree.

Saranne, who took these lovely pics (except this one, obviously).
