We just had a jishin - an earthquake. A pretty small one, but made the
building shake and rumble. Lasted for quite a while too - about 20
seconds, and then it was followed by a smaller one lasting another 5
seconds. That's the second one I've ever felt (I've slept through other
earthquakes!). Pretty cool. And I took cover under my desk, just like
you're supposed to. My friend Creel, (aka "spryte7" from
LiveJournal) who
lives in Oita (the prefecture next to Kumamoto), felt it too, and
according to her they even felt it in Fukuoka (that's Kyushu's main
prefecture, and it's quite far away!).
Earthquakes are pretty normal here, but after reading the book Pompeii,
it's a little unsettling. In that book, earthquakes are the precursor of
the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. We have an active volcano not very far away
from us...Mt. Aso. I'm planning on taking Phil, Jen and Martyn there when
they come....a little scary!
There's a rather disturbing sight just outside my window. On the ground
below my balcony, a severed dummy's head has appeared. I've no idea where
it came from. It looks very eerie. But that's not the most disturbing
part. I've been watching, and a large crow has been pecking at it. It's
obviously just collecting the hair to make a nest, but it really looks
like it's trying to tear the brains out of a human head. Creepy.
Today's Random Kanji: 震度 - shindo - Seismic intensity (I actually studied
this just last night! Freaky...)
