I'm shattered. I leafleted from 8:30 til 10.00, and then from 1:00 til
3:00. Really, that's not very long hours, and it's not exactly strenuous
work, but I'm exhausted nonetheless. I got back home about 4:00 and had a
nap until 7:00! And I'm still very sleepy.
This morning Andy and I leafleted outside an English language high school,
where it was results day for the major exams that all students have to
take in order to successfully "graduate" from high school. However, it
seemed that every other leaflet company in the area had the same time, so
we had to compete with about 10 other leafleters to get out our leaflets.
However, this wasn't too hard - we got all 100 given out within half and
hour. It was pretty interesting to watch the kids, and emotional too; we
saw them beaming and excitedly phoning their parents in some cases, and
some crying their eyes out in others. Andy and I both felt a bit bad
offering leaflets to those who had obviously failed. I can imagine the
feeling - feeling that their entire world had fallen apart because of
these exams. High school exams are actually the biggest cause of suicide
among young Japanese.
It's a pretty "lowest of the low" job, but I have to say, I enjoy it. You
get to people-watch all day, see so many characters. And I even get a
little bit of chance to practise Japanese, if someone makes an inquiry
about the company (to which I make up the answers, normally! So yeah, I
think I'll stick with it for as long as I'm here.
