I got up before dawn today in order to get to work for my first day. Andy
and I were posted outside a high school to distribute our Aeon leaflets
(Aeon is an English-teaching company, advertised all over Japan). Despite
the early hours, it was pretty damn easy work - all we had to do was hand
out leaflets and say "good morning" and "good luck" in English to the kids
as they went into school (to sit their exams). In the afternoon, we then
went and stood outside the Aeon office in Shimotori and did the same
thing. The Japanese public really are so polite; if, understandably, they
didn't want to take the leaflet I was shoving in their face, many actually
apologised! Several also replied to me in English, which was sweet.
I managed to shift more leaflets than Andy, but this is purely because 1)
I'm female, so I can charm the businessmen and 2) I'm very obviously a
gaijin (Andy is actually a Chinese Brit, so he looks Japanese), so I have
a novelty value.
All in all, it was a pretty good first day!
