January 10th 2005 - Shinnenkai

Two days ago, we all discovered that the Japanese not only have Bounenkai (End-Year parties before New Year) but also Shinnenkai (New Party held AFTER New Year). Finding this out, we all decided that we must also participate in this Japanese custom.

So last night was Jeff's Bar again. Didn't go for a nomihoudai this time, because I'd drunk nearly a whole decanter of akazake (Kumamoto's speciality red sake, normally only used for cooking or New Year, very sweet and very strong!), so I tried to go easy on the Smirnoff Ices. This isn't easy though when Larry the barman comes over to pick up your bottle, smiles encouragingly and asks, "same again?" And Larry's so nice, how could I refuse him?

After everyone else had finished their nomihoudai, we decided to go for a karaoke. And god, was it fun. I got to sing a load of cracking songs, including Soft Cell's Tainted Love, Duran Duran's View to a Kill, Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven, Nine Inch Nails' Perfect Drug and Starfuckers Inc., Linkin Park's In The End and, for a laugh, Slipknot's Left Behind, which just about killed my voice! Always amazes me how much variety Japanese karaoke selections have.

Finally got into bed at 4.00am.
