January 4th 2005 - An unexpected late Christmas present

Checking the post today, I found a parcel that Phil sent months ago by sea mail, now only just arrived. What a surprise - he'd enclosed a lovely compilation CD that he'd made for me (which I'm listening to now!), a Black Sabbath album, and a really sweet letter that made me quite emotional. Sigh...I can't ring him or email him to say thank you, because he still doesn't have access to the internet or a private phone line :( Means we get to talk to each other far less often. :( Still, only three months till he comes to Japan :)

I've started doing homework now, term starts again next week. It's been mainly kanji learning today. This in itself can be pretty boring and repetitive, so, like so many things I have to do that are boring, I use my imagination to make it more fun. Hunched over several different books, copying intricate, mystical symbols and writing detailed notes on their "properties" and uses, I feel like some sort of wizard copying magic spells into a spell book. Especially when I'm learning kanji late at night. Actually, to me, learning Japanese is something like learning magic. With the power of language comes to power to control, to affect emotions and situations, and to communicate. And the better you master this magic, the stronger and more powerful it becomes.
