December 18th 2004 - The Mystery of the Flower Shop

Opposite Jeff's Bar (possibly the BEST bar in the world, ever!), out of the window, we can see a flower shop. However, it's a rather strange flower shop. We see many men go into the flower shop, but not coming out, and many men leave the flower shop, but without buying flowers. Very, very mysterious. So, tonight, three of my friends (Nick, Andy and Jonathan, who's just arrived from Yokohama) endeavoured to solve this bewildering puzzle.

Nick was the first to enter. Communicating with Andy via his mobile phone, he reported that at the end of the flower shop, there's a lift, which many salarymen (business men) were entering. Of course, he and the other guys were intrigued, so together they travelled up the lift to see what strange things lurked on the other floors.

On the first floors were located some regular drinking and karaoke bars. But the forth floor held many salarymen surrounded by even more women - clearly a female escort bar. And the fifth floor....

Well, when the guys went to the fifth floor, they found a very classy-looking bar, all black and barely lit. When they asked for the drinks menu, they were told, there was no drinks menu - only a "special" menu. They asked the waiter to clarify exactly what "special" meant, to which the waiter went away, looked in an English language dictionary, and came back with the entry. The entry read "prostitute." The guys said they no longer wanted to see the menu, and left.

So, the mystery of the flower shop has finally been solved.

It's pretty intriguing, and pretty amusing, yet also quite sad. You can imagine the scenario; drunken salaryman goes out, spends his time at the bar with the "special" menu, and then, to apologise to his wife for getting in late and to soothe his guilty conscience, he buys flowers at the strategically-placed florist. Very, very sad.
