December 5th 2004 - A Japanese House

We went to a real Japanese house for the first time today. Andy’s tutor, Chikamasan, had been invited by his teacher to come round to eat at his house, as had Andy and all us Durham students. We got to meet Chikamasan’s tutor, his wife, his daughter Rinosan and her friend Risasan, all of whom were really nice.

I was expecting the house to be, well, very typically Japanese, but in fact it looked like a Western house (only a little smaller). All the decorations were very Western, and there was even a piano in the dining room!

The food was fantastic! Chikamasan’s tutor’s wife had prepared two huge platters of delicious sushi of all kinds, a big bowl of potato salad, green salad, soup for all of us and had even ordered pizzas for us to share. Afterwards, we all ate a delicious cheesecake that Chikamasan had brought – it’s got to be the first cheesecake I’ve actually liked! Then, we all had Western-style tea with a cup and saucer and milk, which was lovely! Needless to say, we were all full by the end of the meal.

During the conversation, Rinosan invited me to go to an onsen (hot spring) some time. I said it sounded great, and that I really wanted to go. However, then she commented that girls never use towels at onsen – they all get completely naked in front of each other! Eeek! I’m not so sure I have the courage to go now…
