December 4th 2004 - Howl's Moving Castle

Today, we all went to watch the film Haoru no Ugoku Oshiro (Howl's Moving Castle), which has just been released in Japan. It's an anime by Studio Ghibli, the same guys who made Spirited Away. I really enjoyed it; like Spirited Away, it's full of magic and mystery, and the animation is superb. It was all in Japanese of course, so I didn't really understand a lot of it, but I don't feel too bad - even our Japanese friend Chie said it was a bit confusing! Steampunk fans will love it, as it's set in a sort of Neo-Edwardian world, as will bishounen lovers - the character Howl is very similar to Haku from Spirited Away, but is perhaps even cuter! No doubt it'll be released in the UK and US in a year or two. I look forward to being able to watch it with English subbing/dubbing!

Weather's terrible right now, bucketing it down. Japanese weather is similar to English weather in that it's quite varied from day to day (it was a really sunny, warm day yesterday), but unlike the UK, where we tend to get sunny spells and rainy spells, the weather does not change much throughout the day. So, if it's raining in the morning, you can pretty much guarantee it'll rain all day.
