Japanese names are cool.  They often have funky/random meanings, both for first names and last names.  In fact, I'm so intrigued by the meanings of Japanese names, I've been collecting examples of names and their meanings.  Here's some of the coolest names I've heard so far:

SURNAMES:
FUKUDA - Lucky Rice Field
HIRABAYASHI - Peace Forest
HIRANO - Peace Field
KAMIYA - Paper Valley
KANEDA - Gold Rice Field
KOBAYASHI - Joyful Forest
KUROSAWA - Black Swamp
NIWA - Red Feather
SUGA - Joy Love
SUZUKI - Bell Tree
YOSHIMI - Joy Hope

BOY'S NAMES:
AKIRA - Bright
HARUKI - Ruling Honour
HIROAKI - Clear Sea, Crystal Sea or Sparkling Sea
MAMORU - Guardian (my academic advisor's first name!)
RYUUICHI - Dragon One, Imperial One
RYUUSUKE - Noble Meditation, Noble Peace
TAKESHI (as in "Beat" Takeshi, Takeshi Kitano) - Warrior
YOUAKI - Ocean Light (my favourite!)
YUUKI (my ex boyfriend's name!) - Gentle Awakening, or can be written to mean Hidden Demon! 

GIRL'S NAMES:
AKI - Bright, Autumn (a friend of mine has this name)
AKIKO, MASAKO - Crystal Child, Sparkle Child
HOSHIKO - Star Child
KEI - Jewel
MEGUMI - Blessed Beauty, Graceful Beauty
NAOMI - Become Beautiful
YUKIKO - Snow Child
