November 12th 2004 - On Japanese Fashion

Isn't it funny how ideals of modesty vary from place to place?

In Japan, its very common to see girls from the ages of 12 and above walking around in REALLY short skirts. In particular, school girls have the shortest skirts of all. They look like belts. It's really quite funny watching them try to ride a bike like that. But this isn't considered sluttish or indecent at all.

Yet, if you expose your midriff, like we Westerners tend to do in the boiling November heat, you get lots of stares and tutting from old ladies.

Moreover, as I've already mentioned, the Japanese are all wearing long-sleeved T-shirts and jackets simply because it is autumn, regardless of the fact that it is boiling hot. However, the legs still remain completely uncovered, and skirts are as short as ever. Weird...why do all the Japanese think we Brits must be freezing cold in our short-sleeved tees, yet don't bat an eyelid at the bare legs of the average schoolgirl. Very very strange.

Oh yes, and a warning to all people of a gothy disposition in Japan: it is near impossible to find black hair dye here. I suppose this should've been obvious really
