November 8th 2004 - Japanese Sweets

I have discovered yet another delicious Japanese snack - mochi. It`s basically rice-pastry cakes filled with an (bean paste), and they are calorific but delicious. I am hopelessly addicted to an. I never thought I'd find something I'd like more than chocolate until I discovered an.

The mochi were found in a little alleyway near the bank, where there are lots of little traditional Japanese shops selling food and clothes. Have any of you watched the film Spirited Away? Well, in that there are these little soot-sprite creatures called Dust Bunnies, who eat these colourful star-shaped sweets called kompeitou. Well, in this alleyway, I found a packet of kompeitou. I was so surprised, its quite an unusual sweet! Didn't actually buy them, but they'd make a good present for any Spirited Away fans.

Once again, we all ended up going to another nomihoudai/tabehoudai (all you can eat/drink) place on Friday night, and it was great fun. The place had a really nice atmosphere - each table was in its own private alcove, creating a sense of intimacy, and the food was already prepared when we got there! We all stuffed ourselves and got rather merry on our unlimited drinks (I was on some sort of lemonade cocktail which was delicious), and then Tom decided that we should all go to one of those photo-booths where you make stickers of your photos.

After that, we rounded the night off with another trip to Sanctuary, which tonight was packed full of gaijin - possibly as many gaijin as there were Japanese. Had even more drinks there (kaluha and milk is yummy!), and at about 2am we decided that we should possibly think about going home. Got in at 3am.
